First Feature: Tierra Andrews

One of my previous colleagues and friend, Tierra Andrews, has been making strides in the creative field for more than six years. Her artistic approach and attention to detail is the catalyst for her amazing work. Not only is Tierra great at what she does, but she deeply cares about the community. I'm happy to have her as one of my first features:

Name: Tierra Andrews

Title: Visual Designer

Location: Birmingham, AL

Background: 2015 graduate from the University of Alabama at Birmingham – BA in Art Studio (Graphic Design) + BS in Psychology

YC: How did you get into the creative field?

Tierra: I’ve always loved the arts, but it wasn’t until I got to UAB (2012) that I really saw an opportunity to make a career out of it.

YC: Why do you love what you do?

Tierra: I love what I do because it’s always changing – there’s something new to learn every day. The work that I do is not only art & design focused but tech focused as well. Technology and design changes FAST and I love that my work reinforces adaptability by keeping me on my toes. Learning is the ultimate goal and there are endless possibilities on this path.

YC: What does the first hour of your day look like?

Tierra: COFFEEEEEEE and emails =)

YC: Do you believe that the people you surround yourself with make a difference in your overall success?

Tierra: Definitely! Iron sharpens iron.

YC: Who inspires you the most, and why?

Tierra: Lebron James. He’s my favorite athlete of all time. He’s someone who used his talent to lift himself – including his family and friends – out of poverty and he uses his platform to evoke change. The fact that he opened a school and covered college tuition for all students is extremely inspirational and admirable. I love how much of a philanthropist he is. Okay, Okay I’m done!

YC: What’s your favorite quote?

Tierra: “You don’t know what you don’t know.” Ray Watts said this to everyone after the UAB football program was eliminated. Now UAB football is back and they’re bowl champions. Go Blazers! It really resonated with me because it reminds me that no one can predict your future; if you want something bad enough then you can make it happen.

I also like the quote, “If you’re the smartest person in the room, find a different room.”

YC: At this stage in your life, what are you willing to give up for your inner peace?

Tierra: Toxic people, toxic anything really.

YC: What’s the main thing holding you back?

Tierra: Procrastination, I’m working on getting better at that this year.

YC: What’s your definition of success?

Tierra: Doing something you’re passionate about.

YC: Considering all of the ups and downs, if you could do it all over again, would you? And why?

Tierra: Yes. Everything happens for a reason. I wouldn’t be who I am today without the adversity.

YC: What’s the best advice you would give to anyone striving to reach their goals?

Tierra: Never stop learning. Use every opportunity to learn as much as you possibly can.
